What is a nasal speculum?

A nasal speculum is a medical instrument used to examine the inside of the nose. The instrument has two blades that are carefully inserted into the nostril and then gently spread apart. This creates more space and provides a better view of the front part of the nasal cavity.

An examination using a nasal speculum is also known as anterior rhinoscopy or rhinoscopia anterior. It allows a doctor or other healthcare professional to examine structures such as the nasal mucosa, nasal septum, nasal turbinates and nasal passages. A separate light source is usually used to provide a clear view of the nasal cavity.

What is a nasal speculum used for?

A nasal speculum is mainly used in ENT (ear, nose and throat) medicine and other medical settings where examination of the nose is required. By gently widening the nostril, the healthcare professional can obtain a better view of the front part of the nasal cavity.

The instrument can be used, for example, when examining:

• abnormalities of the nasal septum;
• changes or irritation of the nasal mucosa;
• nosebleeds;
• swelling or inflammation inside the nose;
• nasal patency;
• other visible abnormalities in the front part of the nasal cavity.

When deeper areas of the nose need to be examined, a nasal endoscope may be used instead of or in addition to a nasal speculum.
