The UPSIT smell test is a standardized, validated tool for measuring a person’s ability to identify odors. The test consists of four booklets with a total of 40 microencapsulated “scratch & sniff” odorants, each combined with a multiple-choice question. The user selects one of four answers for each odor, making the test reliable and easy to administer. Thanks to its forced-choice design, the UPSIT provides objective and reproducible results, even in individuals with reduced smell perception.
The University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT) provides an absolute indication of smell loss (anosmia; mild, moderate, or severe microsomia) as well as an index to detect malingering. Norms from nearly 4,000 men and women spanning the entire age range provide a basis for examinee percentile rank. The Smell Identification Test is the most widely used olfactory test, having been administered to nearly 1,000,000 people worldwide. It is easily self-administered in 10-15 minutes.
The UPSIT is widely used in ENT, neurology, occupational health, and research, and has been applied in studies involving conditions such as smell loss, neurodegenerative diseases, and exposure to chemicals.
A key strength of the UPSIT smell test is its standardized scoring system. Test results are expressed as the number of correct answers (maximum score: 40), which are then compared to normative data based on age and gender.
Important: The UPSIT administration manual is essential for correct interpretation of the results. It contains:
Without the manual, results cannot be properly evaluated or clinically interpreted.
The UPSIT was created by University of Pennsylvania physician and professor of psychology and otorhinolaryngology Dr. Richard Doty. Dr. Doty is also the director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Smell and Taste Center. The test has a secondary purpose as a self-examination test in the diagnosis of many diseases including Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s. The original test has been altered in several ways to be useful in numerous languages and cultures.
Developed at the University of Pennsylvania with funding from the National Institutes of Health, the UPSIT is comprised of 4 booklets, each containing 10 micro encapsulated (scratch & sniff) odors. On each page, there is a different scratch and sniff strip which are embedded with a odorant and a four choice multiple choice question on each page. The scents are released using a pencil. After each scent is released, the patient smells the level and detects the odor from the four choices. There is an answer column on the back of the test booklet, and the test is scored out of 40 items. The score is compared to scores in a normative database from 4000 normal individuals, this tells the level of absolute smell function. The score also indicates how the patient does in accordance to their age group and gender.
Available in 28 languages such as American, Arabic, British, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. The UPSIT smell test is available in multiple languages, making it suitable for international use and cross-cultural research. Please contact us for current language availability.
