Ophthalmoscope and Retinoscope

An ophthalmoscope (also called a funduscope) is an instrument used to examine the inside of the eye, including the retina, optic nerve and blood vessels. This examination, known as ophthalmoscopy, is essential for early detection of conditions such as glaucoma, retinal abnormalities or diabetes-related damage. The device uses a beam of light and special lenses to create a clear, magnified view of the fundus.

A retinoscope (also called a skiascope) is used to assess how the eye reflects light, allowing the refractive error to be determined. It is an essential tool for determining lens prescriptions, especially for children or patients who cannot reliably indicate what they see. The clinician moves a beam of light across the eye and analyses the reflex, revealing whether the patient is myopic, hyperopic or astigmatic.
